Description
Zidovudine, also known as AZT, is a medication used to treat HIV infections. Once inside cells, enzymes convert AZT into its active form, AZT triphosphate (AZT TP). This active metabolite has several key effects:
- Fights HIV: AZT TP blocks the replication of HIV by interfering with an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, crucial for the virus to make copies of itself.
- Inhibits HBV: In addition to HIV, AZT TP can also inhibit the DNA polymerase enzyme used by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV).
- Cell Death Pathway: At high concentrations, AZT TP can trigger a cellular suicide program known as the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis pathway.
