Description

Clofarabine is a nucleoside analog, used to treat cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumors. Clofarabine has been demonstrated to cause low harm in healthy cells and is generally well tolerated by patients. It inhibits DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells. This effect can work in conjunction with other anti-cancer drugs, such as the cytotoxic agent Bleomycin. Clofarabine binds to an intracellular target, preventing DNA synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme DNA polymerase. Inhibition of this enzyme causes cell death. Clofarabine has been studied on pediatric patients ranging in age from one month to 18 years. The medicine has been determined to be safe for use in this demographic.
